This season of football was a real change for Austin. He was finally in a position where he could touch the ball and he really had a great bunch of coaches who were willing to put him in multiple positions. They recognized that he has speed and skill and can be a versatile player.
Their season was strong and they made it to the superbowl. Wheaton had a few really strong players and quite a few strong support players. The coaches worked the boys pretty hard throughout the season and at times, I'm not sure the boys understood that the coaches were prepping them to win it all.
The superbowl was played at a local college stadium, under the lights. What a fun atmosphere. The only hiccup was a rainstorm that passed through earlier in the day backed up all the other divisions, so our early evening start time ended up being a late evening start time.
Austin played defensive end, tight end, and even receiver a few times. Some of the other boys are finally catching up to Austin, and he was not always the biggest kid on the field.
We played our rival city Glen Elyn, a team who beat us pretty good at the start of the season. I think Wheaton gets beat by this team often, so it made the evening extra enjoyable.
They scored a late touchdown, but we had the game in hand.
The boys mobbed each other and took about a thousand pictures. Trophies were handed out immediately and the boys celebrated for quite awhile.
Coach Robbins was a great guy and coach. He has type 1 diabetes also and helped Austin keep focus and maintain his health. It was nice knowing we had a built in support system on the team too.
