We decided to escape to the beach over the fourth of July holiday. Lucky for us, Tracy and Jared's company that had planned to be with them all week changed their plans, so we decided to take their place! We drove down on the morning of the fourth and will leave Sunday afternoon sometime.
We relaxed on the fourth and watched fireworks from the dock in Tracy's neighborhood. I am always in awe at the tremendous sacrifices that have been made and are currently being made so that we can live free. Driving into Swansboro, we passed camp LeJeune (the marine base in North Carolina) and noticed hundreds of handmade signs posted along the fence to the base welcoming soldiers home. Seeing messages to fathers, mothers, boyfriends and even whole platoons brings home the sacrifice being made on our behalf. The signs were a good reminder on the fourth of July of why we should celebrate and how grateful we were to be together as a family.
We spent the next day on the coast. We drove up to Harker's Island and then took a ferry out to Cape Lookout. There is a lighthouse on the point and we were able to check that out and play on the beach for awhile. We then took the 'mule train', which is really just a pickup truck with seats to the point on the Atlantic side of the beach. There was supposed to be incredible shell hunting opportunities, but we didn't find a ton. We have been spoiled by Dean taking us to his 'special' hideouts along other beaches, but we had a great time.
We have really enjoyed watching the kids play with their cousins and spend some time with family.
The holiday has been very enjoyable and is a great time to remember all of our blessings and to reflect on why we were saved to be born in a free country. We also had the chance to stop and see Brandon and Veronica (the great couple we met in Cincinnati when their boy was in the Children's hospital) to say hi, visit and participate in a fundraiser to help pay for Wesley's funeral. They both looked great and we enjoyed seeing their families and sharing in the spirit we have cultivated with them.
