Waterfall Canyon - July 5th

Austin, Grandpa Dean and I went for a hike on Saturday up Adams Canyon in Layton. The goal was to get to the waterfall at the top of the canyon. It was plenty hot and the total hike was about five miles, but we had a great time. Austin has never really gone on a hike, and especially not at this altitude, but did great.

It was fun showing Austin the area I grew up in and sharing with him the types of experiences I had as a kid. We found a huge pine tree in the middle of the trail and spent a lot of time dipping our hats and heads in the creek. Austin could not believe how cold the water was in the creek. It really took your breath away!

These refreshing looking pictures are as fun as they look. What you don't see is the dirt trail with no canopy we had to take going to and from the canyon. As we started the hike, Austin was complaining like crazy, once we hit the shaded trail and creek, his attitude was much better. Reaching the waterfall was a rewarding experience. We think we were at about 8,500 to 9,000 feet and started our hike at about 5,500 feet. The thin air was noticeable, or I'm really getting older. I prefer to think the air is just thin.

We spent a half an hour sitting by the falls enjoying the spray and throwing rocks in the creek. It took us about an hour and a half to hike up the mountain and a little less than an hour to hike down. We counted this as Austin's first mountain of many to come. By the time we got back to Grandpa Dean's, we were wore out. It took us the rest of the evening to recover, but had a great time spending the afternoon together.

Some of my favorite memories about growing up are going hiking with Dad in Ogden and Layton. Good Job Austin!
